The PS4 Is Still Going Strong in 2026

The PS4 Is Still Going Strong in 2026

I’ll be honest, I thought we’d all have moved on from the PS4 by now. The PS5 has been out for years, and everyone said the old console would fade away. But when I looked at what people are actually downloading this year, the PS4 is still very much alive.

So here’s a simple rundown of the most famous PS4 games, and what people are playing right now.

The Big Names Everyone Knows

Red Dead Redemption 2

If one game sums up the PS4, it’s this one. It came out in 2018 and it still tops the charts. In April 2026 it was the most downloaded PS4 game in both North America and Europe. It’s a slow, detailed western about an outlaw named Arthur Morgan. It’s more like a long movie you get to live inside than a typical action game.

God of War (2018)

This one changed the series. Kratos used to be just an angry warrior. Here he’s a dad trying to raise his son in a world full of Norse gods and monsters. The fights are great, but the father and son story is what people remember. It was still in the PS4 top five in Latin America in July 2026.

The Last of Us

A sad, powerful story about survival after a disease wipes out most of the world. The remastered version made the PS4 top ten in July 2026. If you like games with a strong story, you should try it.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Swinging around New York is just plain fun. You don’t need to know anything about the comics to enjoy it. It’s a good pick for almost anyone.

Horizon Zero Dawn

You play as Aloy, hunting giant robot animals in a world that has fallen apart. It looks gorgeous and the mystery behind the world keeps you hooked.

Ghost of Tsushima

A samurai game set in feudal Japan. The scenery is amazing, and the sword fights feel great. There’s even a black and white mode that makes it look like an old samurai film.

Bloodborne

This is the tough one. It’s dark, creepy and very hard. It’s also a PS4 exclusive, so a lot of fans still keep their old console just to play it.

The Witcher 3

A huge fantasy game where even the small side quests feel like proper stories. If you have lots of free time, this one will happily eat it all.

Grand Theft Auto V

It’s very old now, but it still sells and still has loads of players. In 2025 it finished in the top three of PlayStation’s most downloaded games in both the US/Canada and Europe. The online mode is a big reason why.

What People Are Playing Right Now

Famous games are one thing, but what’s trending today? Here’s what the 2026 download charts show.

Sports games

Sports games are always near the top. In Latin America in July 2026, EA Sports FC 26 was the most downloaded PS4 game. Football fans buy the new version every year, and a lot of them still play on their PS4.

Call of Duty

Older Call of Duty games are having a moment. Black Ops II came second on the PS4 list that month, and Modern Warfare also made the top ten. I think a lot of this is nostalgia. People want to play the games they loved years ago.

Fighting games

Mortal Kombat X came third, and Mortal Kombat 11 also made the top ten. They’re cheap now and great to play with friends on the couch.

Batman: Arkham Knight

It took fourth place on the PS4 list. It still looks great and the combat is still fun, even years later.

Scary and survival games

The Forest, a survival horror game, was in seventh place. Older horror games are popular too. Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 kept selling well on PS4 in April 2026.

Online games that never get old

Some games just stay popular year after year. Fortnite, Roblox, GTA V and Minecraft are always near the top of the most played lists. Fortnite was the number one free game on PlayStation for all of 2025. Since these games work on both PS4 and PS5, lots of PS4 owners are still playing them.

So Why Do People Still Use the PS4?

There are a few simple reasons.

First, it’s cheap. Old games go on sale all the time, and you can build a great collection without spending much.

Second, the games are finished. They’ve had their updates and bug fixes, so they usually just work.

Third, nostalgia. Many of us have less free time now, and it feels good to go back to something we already love.

Fourth, your friends are probably still on it. Not everyone upgraded, so online games still have plenty of players.

And last, you can play most of these games on a PS5 anyway, so the library is useful no matter which console you own.

Not Sure What to Play First?

Here’s a quick guide:

  • For a great story, try God of War or The Last of Us.

  • For a huge world to get lost in, play Red Dead Redemption 2.

  • For easy, fun action, go with Spider-Man.

  • For beautiful scenery, pick Ghost of Tsushima or Horizon Zero Dawn.

  • For a real challenge, try Bloodborne.

  • For playing with friends, go for a sports game, Mortal Kombat, or Fortnite.

Final Thoughts

The PS4 is old, but it’s definitely not done. Its best games are still loved, its charts are still busy, and you can pick up great games for very little money. If you’ve been meaning to try one of these, now is a good time.
